Kittery Trading Post

Since 1938, we've been outfitting people for the great outdoors.

Philip (Bing) Adams acquired the Kittery Trading Post in 1938. At that time the store was a modest one-room trading post/gas station. During the early days, Bing's reputation as an "honest horse trader" brought people from far and wide. He swapped fur pelts for gas, beef for ammunition and supplies for a car. In 1961, Bing's son Kevin bought the store, allowing Bing to enjoy the Maine woods as he had taught others to do for nearly 25 years. The gas pumps are gone now, and the floor space had been gradually expanded to 2,500 square feet.

Despite the fact that Kevin was only 21 years old, he did not lack experience in the family business. He had worked in the store for his father off and on since the age of ten. The years of 1961 through 1971 were filled with continuous renovation and expansion as a result of the quality of service and great prices offered to customers. In 1972, the company continued its growth pattern with a significant addition resulting in a total of 10,000 square feet of retail space. In 1977, an additional 16,000 square feet of retail area was completed to meet business demands. There are now over 100 people on staff in the 36,700 square foot complex. In 1978, growth dictated yet another expansion. A separate 9,600 square foot warehouse was constructed to handle the enormous amounts of goods needed to keep the store stocked.

In 1986, after dedicating many years to expanding the family business and increasing sales, Kevin, like his father, decided it was time to retire. He too wanted to enjoy the out-of-doors as he had been helping others to do for over 25 years. A new family consortium was formed to purchase the business, and they were determined to carry on the family's commitment of offering quality service to people who loved the great outdoors. In 1992, a 4,000 square foot expansion was added to the existing warehouse in preparation for another upcoming retail expansion. Warehouse space now totaled 13,600 square feet.

In 1993, as a result of customer demand and company growth, the retail space was expanded from approximately 26,000 square feet to 42,000 square feet. Construction began in January, and the grand opening took place in September. There are now over 300 employees on staff. Although no longer a one room gas station, the family values of quality service, competitive prices and exceptional selection remain intact. It is not uncommon to see the current owners with their sleeves rolled up working side by side with employees on the retail floor or touring the warehouse. The commitment to serve the customer as first priority and to help each other whenever possible remains prominent.
